Select Basenjis have done well in the show ring and in the field and obedience rings. We are celebrating 20 years as Baenji slaves.
We are Jeff Leonard, PE, Tracy Leonard, DVM. We have two children, Robert, age 10 and Katie , age 7.We have owned and bred over 30 AKC conformation champions including an all breed Best in Show winner. We have also put a number of agility and obedience titles on their Basenjis including winning High in Trial at the Basenji National in 1996. BUT what they love to do the most with their basenjis is lure coursing! Lure coursing is the cross country version of greyhound racing that the sighthound breeds use to test their hunting instincts. Over the years we have had a number of ASFA and AKC top ten in the nation running Basenjis. Including in 1995 having the number one AKC lure coursing basenji!
Select Basenjis is proud to be home to bench champions, obedience titlists and field champions. We are members of the Basenji Club of America, the Dayton Kennel Club and the Ohio Indiana Gazehound Organization. We are located in Beavercreek, Ohio just east of Dayton. With over twenty years of experience with this unique breed, we are here to tell you they are NOT for everyone. We have puppies most years. Our emphasis is on temperment and health. If you do decide to become a "basenji slave," feel free to contact us for more information about this primative dog breed which has been in existence for over 3000 years!

The Basenji is a very intelligent breed and are loyal to their owners. The adult Basenji weighs 20-25 pounds when fully grown. They are a sight and scent hound breed and have a very keen nose for tracking game. They also can top out at speeds up to 35 mph. Basenjis are natural hunters and see/smell game very well. Basenjis will tend to be dominant in their behavior with other dogs. They require a fenced-in yard to keep from escaping when they are on the hunt. If they see a cat, bird or rabbit run across in front of them, they will chase it at all costs. Basenjis get killed by automobiles because they were turned loose or escaped their yards. The Basenji does not bark, but can make other noises instead such as a growl, a whine and or a yodel. They have a short coat and keep themselves very clean such as a cat does. They do not shed much and they are odorless. The Basenji does not require much grooming and they do not care to get wet. Basenjis love children if they are raised with them. They are easily trained and learn very quickly. If you are ready for a challenging companion, then consider owning a Basenji.
